Implantable Insulin Pumps and Ports

For patients with severe insulin resistance or those who cannot use external pumps, 2026 has seen a resurgence in Implantable Delivery Solutions. This includes both fully internal pumps and "Indwelling Ports."

An indwelling port is a small device inserted into the skin that stays in place for several days. Instead of injecting directly into the tissue multiple times a day, the patient injects into the port. This protects the skin from repeated trauma and is an ideal "middle ground" for patients who want the benefits of a pump without wearing a permanent device. Meanwhile, fully implantable pumps—though rarer—are used in specialized cases to deliver insulin directly into the peritoneal space, where it is absorbed more efficiently by the liver.
